Visual Arts Committee: Create Me…Preservation and Quality Arts Workshop

This workshop is the second in a set of three being offered by Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities with funding from the Guam Visitors Bureau and support from Guam Preservation Trust and Guampedia. The workshop is being offered to keep Guam artists current with plans for the Festival of the Pacific scheduled for 2016 on Guam, and improve their knowledge on how they can better prepare their works for a professional display.

FESTPAC - May 22-June 4, 2016

CAHA/PREL Talk Story Workshop

The Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency (CAHA) and the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) in collaboration with the Literary Arts Group of the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts Festival and the Guam Preservation Trust invite writers, storytellers and educators to a Talk Story Workshop. The theme for the workshop is the FestPac theme: “" What We Own, What We Have, What We Share, United Voices of the Pacific - Hafa Iyo-ta, Hafa Guinaha-ta, Hafa Ta Patte, Dinanna' Sunidu Siha Giya Pasifiku".

Presenters and topics for the workshop include Terrie Perez – Timeline/Storyline Process; Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera – Historical Value of the Stories to be written; PK Harmon – Publication Matters; Leiana Naholowaa – Developing Program Topic of Stories; Dr. Monique Carriveau Storie – Techniques; Louie Gombar – Oral Presentation; and Antonia Masga Salas – Storytelling. Some stories resulting from this project will be featured in a PREL publication.

The workshop is FREE and scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3 & 10, 2014 at AV#1, RFK Library, University of Guam in Mangilao. UOG Theater's Production of Pagat

University Theater closes its 2013-2014 season with the play Pågat, written by local writers Dr. Michael Lujan Bevacqua and Victoria-Lola Leon Guerrero, directed by Michelle Blas, and featuring choreography by Vince Reyes of Inetnon Gef På’go. Pågat explores the complexities of cultural identity and change through the lives of four modern young adults and the memories of a cast of spirits, who share key moments in the history of the Chamoru people. The play is set in a latte site in the jungles of Pågat. The play also conveys the essence of the word Pågat, which means to advise or give counsel, as both the modern characters and the ancient spirits help each other work through personal struggles with identity, culture, and destiny.

DATES: April 24-26 and May 1-3

TIMES: Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Play starts at 7 p.m.

PLACE: University of Guam Fine Arts Theater

ADMISSION: $10.00 general admission, $7.50 students and seniors and FREE for all UOG and GCC students with student ID or schedule. Tickets can be purchased at the UOG box office on performance nights.

MACHOSFLAKOS MADNESS FEATURES STORYTELLING SLAM - May 5

Guam’s storytelling group, Ginen I Hila’ I Maga’taotao Siha Association invites the general public to a MACHOSFLAKOS MADNESS, a night of storytelling slam on any subject matter to be held at the Mangilao Senior Citizens Center on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 7pm.

The group welcomes new members as it is preparing for its major role as the Literary Arts Committee of the 2016 hosting of the Festival of the Pacific Arts on Guam.  The group also plans a 70^th Anniversary of Liberation event entitled a Night of Tears In Their Own Words with reflections of the dark days of World War II and a Halloween Puengen Na’ma’å’ñao at Camp Te’a in Ipan, Talofofo.

The MACHOSFLAKOS MADNESS will feature first time storytellers who will be chosen at random or by volunteering at the gathering on May 5.  For additional information, current president Peter R. GPLS Presents Certificate of Appreciation to PIBBA Volunteers

PIBBA Volunteerism at Hagatna Public Library: Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association (PIBBA) Guam members were awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation on April 15, 2014 by the Guam Public Library System (GPLS) for sharing cultural stories and poems in celebration of Chamorro Month. They are a group of people who work together to improve literacy and reading instruction in Guam and Micronesia.
